Biography

I am a research associate at the Chair of International Economics at TU Dresden. I graduated from the development economics master’s program at GSID Nagoya University in Japan. My research interests include convergence, machine learning applications, economic growth, remote sensing, trade, and spatial econometrics. I also studied a 5-year physics BSc at the National University of Colombia. Other research interests include areas of socio/econ-physics, such as opinion dynamics, applications of statistical mechanics, and network theory. Moreover, I cofounded the QuaRCS lab.

Regional Convergence and Spatial Dependence across Subnational Regions in ASEAN: Evidence from Satellite Nighttime Light Data

Across ASEAN regions, almost 60 percent of the differences in GDP per capita can be predicted by a luminosity-based measure of GDP. Based on this measure, regional inequality within most countries has not significantly decreased, spatial dependence is increasing, and spatial clusters (hotspots and coldspots) cross multiple national boundaries.

Regional Convergence and Spatial Dependence across Subnational Regions of ASEAN: Evidence from Satellite Nighttime Light Data

Satellite nighttime light data are increasingly used for evaluating the performance of economies in which official statics are non-existent, limited, or non-comparable. In this paper, we use a novel luminosity-based measure of GDP per capita to study regional convergence and spatial dependence across 274 subnational regions of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) over the 1998-2012 period.
